As doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, and providers in Pediatrics and Neonatal Medicine we advise parents on the best ways to foster health and well being for their children and their family. As professionals in the medical field we often fall short in taking our own advice, which in the end affects our own health and our lives. We give parents brochures and pamphlets to supplement the conversations we have. It's called anticipatory guidance. As adults have access to information from a myriad of sources including books and magazines, resources online, and our associations. If anything we probably have an abundance of information with a lack of taking the next steps towards using the information to live our best life. This is true for our health, our wealth, and our overall well being.





What can one do in this fast paced life to still be healthy? Here we will talk about the most important tips that one has to follow to get the best results.

Almost everything you buy in this day and age has low fat written on it. As the only society in the history of humanity to actively go low fat, it is no surprise to see we are the fattest. With no correlation between fat consumption (we are not eating more today than the past) and obesity you do wonder how much longer people are going to keep sounding this low-fat horn. By not eating fat within your meals you will invariably not hit your ideal fuel mix and this will mean you are hungry or have food cravings. At this point you are much more likely to eat high sugar or sensitive foods, e.g. chocolate, breads, biscuits etc. Low fat meals also mean you do not consume enough of the fat soluble vitamins. This reduces overall efficiency which will affect body fat.

And so the first of my Healthy Living Tips for you is: the only person who really knows what's best for you is you! Unfortunately most of us are not encouraged to trust and believe in ourselves. We tend to be very influenced by other people's opinions and many times, we follow advice that does not necessarily feel right. The reason we ignore that feeling is because we are taught to ask for advice and follow it.

When I was in my late forties, I used to joke that I must be approaching my "best before" date! Within just a few short years into my early fifties, I had a succession of health issues. I had been well and healthy all my life, but suddenly the bottom seemed to fall out of my world. I had shingles, then I had gall bladder surgery, then I had a heart attack - two actually, one week apart, later I had a hernia operation, plus I'm coping with the unpronounceable Dupuytren's Contracture, and not to even mention benign prostate enlargement (BPH) or erectile dysfunction (ED). Yes, it's horribly true, I now suffer from Acronyms. I thought my entire body was going to slowly fall apart!

I recovered from much of this in due course, and even got back to running again for a few years. Then I started to fall over all the time, returning bloodied and lame several times a week. Enough! I stopped running. Then I Healthy living advice got fat! If you have heart issues, there is nothing worse for you than gaining weight around the middle. I seemed to be spiraling out of control.

Yo-yo diets always seemed to present the easy solution, because what we refuse to accept is that losing weight the natural way is long-term and gradual process, which takes time and efforts in order to succeed.
